Armenia to formally join International Criminal Court in 2024

17 November 2023 17:27

Armenia will become a full member of the International Criminal Court (ICC) on 1 February 2024, the Hague-based tribunal announced on November 17.

Earlier, a ceremony was held at the UN to hand over the original of the ratification to the UN Treaty Division for safekeeping. The handover of the original finalised the process of Armenia's accession to the International Criminal Court.

"Armenia will become the 124th State Party and the 19th country from the Eastern European group," the document reads, Caliber.Az reports.

In addition, the ICC noted that the Armenian side handed over documents confirming that Yerevan retroactively accepts the jurisdiction of the court from May 10, 2021.

The Armenian National Assembly ratified the Rome Statute of the ICC on October 3.

The decision of official Yerevan angered Moscow. The Russian Foreign Ministry said that it would have the most negative consequences for bilateral relations, as "the Armenian partners were initially informed of the unacceptability of Armenia's ratification of the Rome Statute of the ICC in conditions when this structure issued 'arrest warrants' for Russia's top leadership".
