Armenian Church to seek international intervention amid government pressure

The Armenian Apostolic Church has announced plans to appeal to international organizations in response to what it describes as ongoing pressure from government authorities.

The decision followed a meeting of the Supreme Spiritual Council in Etchmiadzin, attended exclusively by representatives of dioceses across Armenia, Caliber.Az reports, citing Armenian media.

In an official statement, the Church said it intends to convey its position to relevant international bodies to counter what it regards as information campaigns by the authorities, which allegedly spread false narratives about the Church.

Council members also denounced “encroachments on the Armenian Church, the criminal prosecution of hierarchs, and the actions of rebellious bishops, which they believe are leading to a schism within the Church.”

Acknowledging the urgency of the situation, the Supreme Spiritual Council decided to convene a Holy Synod in the near future, issuing directives to ensure its prompt organization.
