Armenian deputy speaker accuses opposition of pre-election bribery
Ruben Rubinyan, Deputy Speaker of National Assembly of Armenia, has sharply criticised alleged vote-buying ahead of upcoming elections, accusing political forces linked to detained businessman Samvel Karapetyan of attempting to influence voters.
In a video adress shared on Facebook, Rubinyan was responding to reports that “Strong Armenia,” a party associated with Karapetyan—who is currently under house arrest—is distributing pre-election bribes. He condemned both the practice and those he claims are downplaying or ignoring it, Caliber.Az reports.
In a strongly worded statement, Rubinyan accused opposition public figures, including media representatives and former officials, of showing contempt toward voters by referring to them in derogatory terms such as “rabble” and “biomass.” He argued that such attitudes underpin efforts to justify or conceal electoral bribery.
“The decisive force is the people,” Rubinyan said, adding that voters would ultimately determine the outcome in the June 7 election and hold accountable those involved in corruption or attempts to manipulate the process.
He also criticised segments of the media, alleging that some outlets obscure their sources of funding while promoting political agendas. Rubinyan pledged that authorities would push for greater transparency, including requiring media organizations to disclose their financial backers.
