Art in public spaces: The legacy of Arif Agamalov A master who put his soul into creating masterpieces

27 March 2025 09:07

Azerbaijani artists have always played a key role in creating outstanding works of art that adorn not only museums but also public spaces. Their works—whether mosaics, sculptures, or monumental panels—have become an integral part of the country's cultural heritage, showcasing a high level of craftsmanship and artistic vision.

Arif Melikaga oglu Agamalov was not just a painter but also a master of monumental and applied arts, whose works adorned the city of Baku for several decades.

Arif Agamalov, an Honoured Artist of Azerbaijan, began his artistic career in the late 1950s and continued creating his works until the 1990s. Born on May 30, 1928, he graduated from the Azim Azimzade Art School in Baku and later studied at the Moscow Institute of Applied and Decorative Arts as well as the Lviv Art Institute. His works have embellished many landmark buildings and sites in Azerbaijan. Among Agamalov's major works are the mosaic panels at the Neftçilər metro station and the mosaic friezes on the facade of the former Absheron Hotel, where he also contributed to the interior design. His talent was further showcased in chamotte sculptural reliefs with a jazz theme, created for the hotel's café.

Another of his favourite materials was copper, which he used in the relief compositions on the facade of the Opera Studio—now adorning the facade of the Uzeyir Hajibeyov Conservatory. His works in the sgraffito technique decorated the Children's Theatre in the Seaside Boulevard Park.

At the age of 32, he became the director of the Azerbaijan Art Fund, a position he held for over fifteen years. He then spent ten years as the chief artist of the Fund and the chief artist of Baku. Arif Agamalov passed away in 2006, leaving behind a significant artistic legacy. His sons, Eldar and Melik Agamalov, also became renowned artists, continuing their family’s creative tradition.

In the Soviet Union, attention was given not only to the construction of buildings but also to their exterior and interior design. Cultural centres, chess schools, and many other public buildings were adorned with unique, handcrafted works by skilled masters. These decorative elements were not only functional but also formed part of the cultural heritage that shaped the country's aesthetic identity.

One of A. Agamalov’s most remarkable works was a magnificent chandelier installed in the Chess School in Salyan. This masterpiece not only illuminates the space but also stands as a true work of art, reflecting Agamalov’s talent and craftsmanship.

This chandelier is a complex structure with numerous intricate details. It is adorned with decorative elements in the form of glass and copper spheres, positioned at the top and bottom of the design. The central part of the chandelier stands out with inlays shaped like chess pieces, giving it a unique and distinctive appearance. Crystal and glass inserts add brilliance and elegance, especially when the light refracts through them.

Long pendants hanging from the lower part of the chandelier complete the composition, creating an effect of lightness and airiness. These elements enhance its graceful appearance, making it even more majestic. The chandelier’s impressive dimensions (4 m x 1.7 m) exemplify masterful craftsmanship, created with exceptional attention to detail.

The entire composition of the chandelier is strikingly beautiful and blends harmoniously into the interior of the Chess School. The variety of materials and forms, the combination of decorative spheres, chess-piece motifs, and crystal elements give the chandelier exceptional artistic value. It serves as the centrepiece and most luxurious feature of the building’s interior.

The ceiling to which the chandelier is attached is also noteworthy. It is decorated with intricate ornaments and decorative elements. At its centre, a circular rosette is surrounded by symmetrical patterns that complement the overall design of the space. An interesting fact about the installation process is that it required significant effort—craftsmen had to dismantle the building’s roof to lift and secure the massive structure with a crane before reassembling the roof. This approach highlights the high level of skill and responsibility of those involved in the creation and installation of the chandelier.

Another remarkable work by Arif Agamalov can be found in the House of Culture in Neftchala—two magnificent chandeliers that stand as true masterpieces of art. These chandeliers are distinguished by their impressive size and intricate multi-tiered design. Each section is crafted with a high degree of precision and artistic excellence.

The chandeliers are adorned with intricate repoussé work, creating elaborate and refined patterns that give them a unique visual appeal. Their lampshades are shaped like spheres, adding a touch of elegance and luxury. The multi-tiered design ensures an even distribution of light throughout the space, making it brighter and more inviting. These chandeliers embody a perfect balance between functionality and artistic expression, offering not only illumination but also a captivating visual experience. They stand as a striking example of craftsmanship and creativity, forming an integral part of Neftchala’s cultural heritage.

Preserving these unique decorative masterpieces is essential for future generations. Though seemingly a small element of interior design, they, like many others, carry the memory of an era when art and craftsmanship played a crucial role in shaping everyday life. It is through such details that we can better understand and appreciate the cultural richness and diversity of our past. They serve as a reminder of the importance of preserving cultural traditions and respecting the work of the artisans who poured their hearts into creating these masterpieces.
