Axios: Ukraine submits amendments to Trump’s peace plan to make it "doable"
On December 10, Ukraine provided the Trump administration with its detailed response to the latest draft of the U.S. peace plan, according to Ukrainian and U.S. officials cited by Axios.
The 20-point plan, proposed by former President Donald Trump, includes significant territorial concessions and other demands, putting growing pressure on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to accept it quickly.
Ukrainian National Security Adviser and chief negotiator Rustem Umerov sent the response to Jared Kushner, Trump’s adviser and son-in-law. A Ukrainian official said the submission contains comments and proposed amendments aimed at “making the whole thing doable.”
The Ukrainian government consulted with its European allies, primarily the E3 countries (the U.K., France, and Germany), before sending its response. The official noted that the submission includes new ideas for resolving contentious issues, including territorial disputes and the status of the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant.
Tensions over the peace plan were highlighted in a call between Trump and the E3 leaders on December 10. The call took place amid growing tensions and distrust between the U.S. and European powers over how to end the Russia-Ukraine war and the Transatlantic relationship in general. Trump commented afterwards: “We discussed Ukraine in pretty strong words. We will see what happens.”
A Ukrainian official said that senior military officials from the U.S. and Ukraine are expected to hold a virtual meeting on December 11 to continue negotiating specific parts of the peace plan.
