Azerbaijan’s green power surge: 550 million kWh of clean energy from Karabakh, East Zangezur
In 2024, 32 hydroelectric power plants (HPPs) operating in Karabakh and East Zangezur produced approximately 550 million kWh of environmentally friendly "green" energy, marking a significant milestone for Azerbaijan’s renewable energy sector.
About one third of this energy—around 200 million kWh—was directed to supply power to the territories liberated from occupation, helping to meet the growing energy demands of the region, Caliber.Az reports, citing Azerbaijani electrical power producer Azerenerji
The remaining two-thirds were fed into the national energy grid, contributing to the energy supply of other regions across the country.
This initiative has had substantial environmental benefits. By generating energy through hydroelectric power, Azerbaijan has saved 120 million cubic meters of natural gas and prevented the release of 225,000 tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, aligning with the country's broader goals for sustainable energy development.
In a significant development, seven new hydropower plants were inaugurated in Karabakh and East Zangezur in 2024, underscoring the region’s commitment to renewable energy growth. Furthermore, an additional 11 hydropower plants are planned to be opened in 2025, further expanding the country’s green energy capacity.
