On October 15, 2023, President Ilham Aliyev raised the Azerbaijani flag in Khankendi, marking the restoration of Azerbaijan's sovereignty over the entire Karabakh region after decades of conflict. This followed a decisive one-day anti-terror operation launched on September 19, during which Azerbaijani forces neutralized illegal Armenian armed formations and their military infrastructure in the region.
Subsequently, Azerbaijani authorities have been actively clearing Khankendi of weapons and ammunition left behind. Significant caches, including automatic rifles, machine guns, grenades, and thousands of cartridges, have been discovered and seized. These efforts underscore Azerbaijan's commitment to ensuring peace and security in the liberated territories.
President Aliyev emphasized the nation's long-standing pursuit of a peaceful resolution, stating, "We have raised a young generation ready to die for the Motherland... We, the people of Azerbaijan, are in their eternal debt."
Note that, Karabakh University was established in Khankendi by a decree from President Aliyev on November 28, 2023. The university aims to train highly qualified professionals to support the region’s socio-economic development and preserve historical educational traditions. It began operations in September 2024 with 1,154 students across 6 faculties and 27 programmes.
