Azerbaijan’s wind power surges 50-fold despite overall energy dip
Azerbaijan’s wind power generation increased more than 50-fold in the first quarter of 2026, despite a slight overall decline in total electricity production.
The country produced 6.54 billion kWh of electricity in January–March 2026, representing a 3% decrease compared with the same period in 2025, Caliber.Az reports, citing State Statistical Committee.
Commercial electricity accounted for 6.34 billion kWh of total output, down 2.6% year-on-year.
Electricity generation at thermal power plants amounted to 5.47 billion kWh, a decrease of 4.3% compared with January–March 2025.
Hydropower output also declined, falling 24.2% to 501.9 million kWh.
In contrast, wind energy saw a sharp increase, rising 51.8 times to 233 million kWh. Solar power generation reached 74.7 million kWh, reflecting a 1.1% increase.
Electricity produced from biomass and waste combustion totaled 66.7 million kWh, up 23.2% compared to the previous year.
Meanwhile, water treatment and distribution volumes rose 8.9% year-on-year, reaching 143.6 million cubic metres.
