COP30 chief highlights Baku Climate Action Week's role in fossil fuel phaseout

07 September 2026 14:28

The outcomes of the Baku Climate Action Week negotiations will feed into a roadmap for phasing out fossil fuels ahead of COP31, COP30 Executive Director and Brazil’s National Secretary for Climate Change Ana Toni said, Caliber.Az reports.

“Participants in Baku Climate Action Week are working to formulate recommendations that will help synchronise global electrification goals with plans for phasing out fossil fuels. All proposals developed will be submitted to the working group for the finalisation of the roadmap toward COP31,” Toni said at a roundtable held as part of Baku Climate Action Week 2026 (BCAW 2026).

According to Toni, despite the lack of consensus and an official mandate to agree on a unified plan at the previous session, a decision was made to continue developing the document on an initiative basis. The completed roadmap is expected to be presented to colleagues from Türkiye and Australia during COP31.

Toni said a key element of the document will be large-scale electrification, encompassing production, consumption and economic viability.

“We see these processes coming together in a much broader transformation. This is not simply about the energy transition, but about changing the economic models we use. That is why it is so important to engage all stakeholders — especially the private sector, regional and municipal authorities, as well as civil society,” she added.
