Azerbaijan expands electricity export geography, deputy minister says

Azerbaijan is expanding its electricity export opportunities while simultaneously increasing its renewable energy capacity, Deputy Energy Minister Orkhan Zeynalov has said at Baku Climate Action Week 2026 (BCAW 2026).

According to him, 11 solar and wind power plants with a combined capacity of 2 GW are planned to be integrated into the national power system by 2027, Caliber.Az reports, citing local media.

The share of renewable energy in total energy generation is expected to reach 39% by 2030 and approximately 43% by 2035.

The commissioning of 2 GW of renewable energy capacity by the end of 2027 will enable the generation of 5 billion kWh of electricity annually, save around 1.1 billion cubic meters of gas and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2.5 million tons.

Zeynalov noted that Azerbaijan plans to develop around 8 GW of onshore and offshore renewable energy capacity by 2032. The electricity will be used to supply planned data centers and AI centers, as well as exported through four interconnectors.

“Developing renewable energy generation capacity is only part of the task. Today, the geography of energy links is rapidly changing across the region, from Central Asia to Europe,” he added.
