Azerbaijan invited to join Global Offshore Wind Alliance

07 September 2026 20:05

The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) has proposed that Azerbaijan join the Global Offshore Wind Alliance during a meeting between Azerbaijani Energy Minister Parviz Shahbazov and IRENA Director-General Francesco La Camera.

The ministry stated that the sides highlighted the importance of the initiative for Azerbaijan’s green energy agenda, given the country’s significant offshore wind potential in the Caspian Sea, Caliber.Az reports, citing local media.

The meeting also reviewed the results of long-standing cooperation between Azerbaijan and IRENA. La Camera described Azerbaijan as one of the agency’s most active and reliable partners, noting that initiatives launched at COP29 on energy storage systems, power grids and hydrogen had made an important contribution to the global energy agenda.

The sides also discussed preparations for COP31 and exchanged views on organising events in Antalya focused on implementing the COP29 Global Energy Storage and Grids Pledge and advancing commitments under the Hydrogen Declaration.

They also discussed support for advancing these initiatives, the role of hydrogen in the energy transition, and the growing importance of clean fuels in aviation and shipping.

The meeting also addressed Azerbaijan’s role as vice-president of the IRENA Assembly for the next term and future areas of cooperation between Baku and the agency.
