Azerbaijani footballer sentenced to death in Iran
Ali Daei, a former Iranian national team player of Azerbaijani origin, has been sentenced to death.
The forward is accused of participating in protests after the murder of Mahsa Amini, Report informs with reference to foreign media.
Apart from Daei, who is currently in custody, another 15,000 people will be executed, the report adds.
In early October, he was detained for participating in an action organised in the city of Saggiz, after which he was sent to prison.
The Bayern Munich club (Germany) on its official website expressed concern about the fate of its former players Ali Daei and Ali Karimi: "We have contacted the German embassy in Iran and expressed our readiness to provide support. We will keep this issue in the spotlight."
The riots in Iran sparked in September by the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini after she was detained by vice police for incorrectly wearing the hijab. Official Tehran ruthlessly suppressed the protests, and access to social networks and the Internet was restricted in the country. Local human rights activists report that at least 185 people were killed during the riots.
