Azerbaijani Ombudswoman, German envoy mull rights situation
Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudswoman) of the Azerbaijani Republic Sabina Aliyeva met Cerman ambassador to Azerbaijan Ralph Horlemann.
The Ombudswoman informed the envoy in detail about the work carried out in Azerbaijan in the field of protection of human rights and freedoms, Caliber.Az reports per local media.
Stressing the importance of studying experience in the field of human rights in other countries, S. Aliyeva talked of effective cooperation between the Ombudswoman and national human rights institutions of foreign countries, as well as with regional and international associations uniting these institutions.
It was noted that against the backdrop of modern challenges, strengthening cooperation between institutions working in the field of human rights protection plays an important role in the development of legal culture, as well as in ensuring world peace.
The Ombudswoman spoke about the latest amendments made to the Act of the Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman) of the Republic of Azerbaijan. She noted that the powers of the Ombudsman were expanded in the field of protection of the rights of people with disabilities and children, prevention of discrimination, and other fields.
She added that within the mandate of the National Preventive Mechanism, the Ombudswoman addressed the president of the country with proposals on pardon based on visits to institutions, where detainees cannot leave voluntarily, as well as appeals of convicts and members of their families.
Aliyeva noted that this year, Azerbaijan will host the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change - COP29, preparations are underway for the high-level event.
Several other issues of mutual interest were also discussed at the meeting, and questions of interest by the envoy were answered.
