18 December 2024 18:50

Rovshan Rustamov, the Chairman of Azerbaijan Railways has been welcomed by his Iranian counterpart during his visit to Tehran.

The talks between Rustamov and Iranian Jabbar Ali Zakeri Sardroudi focused on the development of the Astara terminal in Iran, located at the coastal border point between the two countries bordering the Azeri city bearing the same name, Caliber.Az reported. Modernization efforts are expected to be completed by the end of 2025.

Another key point on the agenda was the construction of a railway bridge over the Araz River, which makes up part of the natural border between the two countries. It will connect Azerbaijan’s Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic with the main territory of Azerbaijan through Iran, ensuring sustainable land transport links.

Steps to enhance operations at the Southern Cargo Terminal were also touched upon. As part of the visit, the Azerbaijani delegation inspected the railway infrastructure in the Iranian city of Julfa. They visited a workshop for changing railway wheelsets and held further discussions with Iranian officials on the implementation of joint projects.
