Baku to host Azerbaijani-German talks on renewable energy co-op in May

02 May 2025 18:38

Baku will host a meeting between Azerbaijani and German representatives to advance cooperation in the transition to renewable energy sources in the latter half of May.

According to a statement from the German-Azerbaijani Chamber of Commerce (AHK Azerbaijan), the upcoming discussions will build on previous engagements between Azerbaijan’s Economy Minister Mikayil Jabbarov and representatives of major German energy companies, Caliber.Az reports via local media

The Chamber highlighted that the talks will centre on technological collaboration, support for the implementation of national energy strategies, the launch of joint renewable energy projects, and the adaptation of sustainable energy technologies at the local level.

"Topics related to the energy transition continue to hold a key place in the Azerbaijani-German dialogue. The talks are expected to explore cooperation opportunities in green and sustainable energy, showcase successful projects, and promote the exchange of experiences and best practices between stakeholders from both countries," AHK Azerbaijan noted.

Earlier, AHK Azerbaijan’s Executive Director, Nargiz Vik, stated that Germany could play a key role in helping Azerbaijan establish an innovation hub focused on renewable energy.

Under Azerbaijan’s current energy roadmap, the country aims to build eight industrial-scale solar and wind power plants by 2027, with a combined capacity of approximately 2 gigawatts (GW). The total investment in these projects is projected to reach $2.8 billion, sourced from both domestic and international funding.

The successful implementation of these initiatives will enable Azerbaijan to generate 5.3 billion kilowatt-hours of green energy annually, raise the share of renewables in its energy mix to 32.6 per cent, conserve up to 1.2 billion cubic metres of natural gas per year, and cut greenhouse gas emissions by 2.5 million tonnes.

Looking ahead, Azerbaijan plans to boost its installed renewable energy capacity to 7 GW by 2030, with 5 GW designated for export.
