Barnier promises inclusive government amid disagreements with Macron
Newly-appointed French Prime Minister Michel Barnier addressed the media on September 7 to clarify the composition of his new government and outline his policy priorities.
In a statement on French television, Barnier emphasized that his administration would not be exclusively composed of members from right-wing parties, Caliber.Az reports referring to foreign media sources.
“It will not be solely a government of right-wing parties,” Barnier asserted.
When questioned about the inclusion of left-wing parties in his government, Barnier confirmed that there would be such representation. “Yes, there will be representatives of the left as well,” he stated, indicating his intention to foster a more inclusive and balanced government structure.
Despite Barnier’s assurances, representatives of left-wing parties have previously expressed their intention to refrain from cooperating with him, raising questions about the practicality of this inclusive approach.
Barnier also acknowledged having “many disagreements” with French President Emmanuel Macron. This revelation hints at potential policy conflicts and challenges within the new administration.
Regarding his policy agenda, Barnier outlined plans to address pension reform. He emphasized the need for discussions aimed at “improving this law,” signalling a potential overhaul or adjustment to existing pension policies. Additionally, Barnier highlighted the need for “concrete measures” to combat illegal immigration, suggesting a focus on actionable solutions to this pressing issue.
Barnier, who represents the right-wing "Republicans" party, was appointed by Macron as the new prime minister on September 6.
