UK, Ukraine sign Thales missile deal in historic defence pact
The United Kingdom and Ukraine have signed a landmark agreement for the supply of Thales air defence missiles, marking a significant step in bilateral defence cooperation.
Described by the UK government as “historic,” the deal underscores Britain's long-term commitment to supporting Ukraine amid ongoing Russian aggression, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
According to a statement published on the British government’s website, the deal is valued at £2.5 billion and will span 19 years. Under the agreement, the UK will provide Ukraine with 5,000 Thales missiles to strengthen the country’s air defence capabilities.
“We are delivering vital equipment to Ukraine and strengthening our own defence industrial base. This is a clear demonstration of our Change Plan in action — supporting British business, increasing exports and standing shoulder to shoulder with Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression,” said UK Export Minister Gareth Thomas.
The deal was officially signed on July 10 during the Ukraine Recovery Conference held in Rome. In addition to the missile agreement, Britain has pledged up to £283 million in bilateral assistance for Ukraine in 2026.
The Thales missiles in question are 70mm air defence projectiles designed primarily for countering attack drones. With a range of up to 3,000 meters, some of these missiles are laser-guided and can be launched from heavy machine guns.
Beyond military support, British officials say the agreement also aims to bolster the UK’s defence industry by boosting exports and supporting domestic businesses.
