Berlin prepares for possible large-scale conflict with Russia Moscow’s ambassador claims

16 December 2025 17:56

The German government is reportedly accelerating preparations for a full-scale military conflict with Russia, Sergei Nechayev, Russian Ambassador to Germany, said.

In an interview with Germany‑based independent media platform apolut, he claimed that Berlin has chosen a course aimed at dismantling long-standing bilateral engagement with Moscow, scaling back political dialogue, and unleashing barbaric Russophobia, Caliber.Az reports.

The diplomat added that amid these actions, Germany is imposing tens of thousands of sanctions on Russia and developing a plan to inflict a “strategic defeat” on the country. He described this approach as reflecting a shift in German political eras and a rejection of compromise with Moscow.

German and NATO officials have publicly acknowledged that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has heightened European security concerns, prompting planning and exercises for possible large-scale conflict scenarios with Russia to strengthen deterrence and collective defence.

Leaks and reporting on a classified German defence document (“Operations Plan Germany”) show Berlin preparing logistics and infrastructure for potential NATO reinforcement and coordination in the event of a major confrontation with Russia, though NATO describes some media reports as hypothetical scenarios rather than fixed policy.

German political leaders — including the foreign minister and intelligence officials — have warned that Russia could develop the capability to threaten or attack a NATO member by the end of the decade, reflecting Western assessments of Moscow’s military buildup rather than an assertion that war is imminent.
