Bloomberg: Pentagon considers scaling back forces in Italy, Spain
European allies expect new decisions from US President Donald Trump regarding the deployment of American troops in Europe, with possible scenarios including a reduction of forces in Italy and Spain, according to Bloomberg.
Within NATO, officials are anticipating further reassessments of the US military posture in Europe following the decision to withdraw 5,000 troops from Germany.
According to sources cited in the report, the Trump administration is also considering abandoning a plan approved under former President Joe Biden to deploy long-range missiles in Germany.
Other options under discussion include reducing US participation in military exercises in Europe and redeploying some forces from countries considered “less loyal” to the current administration toward allies viewed as more aligned. Poland is mentioned among the countries that could receive additional US military presence, as it has repeatedly expressed willingness to host more American troops.
The Pentagon declined to comment, while the White House referred questions to statements by Secretary of State Marco Rubio. During a visit to Italy, Rubio said: “If one of the main reasons why the US is in NATO is the ability to have forces deployed in Europe that we can project to other contingencies, and now that’s no longer the case – at least when it comes to some NATO members – that’s a problem and has to be examined.”
