PM: Iraq moves to bring weapons under state control
Iraq is working to bring weapons and arms shipments under state control, with political forces broadly agreeing on the need to address the issue, Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi said.
Al-Zaidi said the authorities are developing mechanisms to restrict the flow of weapons into the country and ultimately resolve the issue of arms outside state control, Al Hadath reports.
The prime minister stressed that Iraq neither intends nor has the capacity to engage in a military conflict, adding that the government would not allow what he described as “Iraq’s enemies” to exploit the country’s vulnerabilities.
He also said the government’s campaign against corruption is continuing and enjoys broad backing from Iraq’s political forces.
On his political future, Al-Zaidi reiterated that he does not plan to seek a second term, honouring a commitment he had previously made. He said the reforms currently being implemented are intended to deliver lasting results for future governments.
Addressing Iraq’s foreign policy, Al-Zaidi said the country’s role in the international arena is evolving. Iraq, he argued, is gradually moving from being viewed primarily as a conflict zone toward becoming a platform for dialogue, negotiations and regional understanding.
The prime minister also emphasised Iraq’s continued importance in the Middle East, saying Baghdad has no intention of severing its ties with Arab states or other regional neighbours.
