BMW, Toyota forge ahead with hydrogen fuel cell vehicles

06 September 2024 07:46

BMW and Toyota are advancing their collaboration in hydrogen fuel cell technology, with plans to launch BMW's first-ever series production fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) by 2028. This partnership aims to push the boundaries of hydrogen mobility, offering consumers an additional all-electric powertrain option with zero local emissions.

The collaboration leverages the expertise of both companies, combining BMW’s leading development capabilities in electric drive technologies with Toyota’s experience to create a new generation of fuel cell powertrain systems, Caliber.Az reports per foreign sources.

This joint effort reflects a shared commitment to advancing the hydrogen economy and achieving carbon neutrality through 'technology-openness' and a 'multi-pathway' approach.

Oliver Zipse, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG, described the initiative as a historic milestone, marking the debut of a fuel cell vehicle from a global premium manufacturer. He highlighted how this development will influence future mobility and cater to growing demand for FCEVs.

Toyota's President, Koji Sato, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the deepened partnership and shared values of both companies. He noted that their collaboration would focus on next-generation fuel cell systems and infrastructure expansion to support a hydrogen-based society.

The BMW Group and Toyota will jointly develop the powertrain system for both commercial and passenger vehicles, allowing for the creation of hydrogen FCEVs under each brand. This collaboration is expected to enhance the availability of FCEV options, reduce technology costs through shared development and procurement, and maintain distinct brand identities for each company’s hydrogen models.

Following successful global testing of the BMW iX5 Hydrogen pilot fleet, BMW is set to introduce the hydrogen-powered production model in 2028. This new vehicle will complement BMW’s existing lineup, offering an additional FCEV option alongside battery electric vehicles (BEVs), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), and internal combustion engines (ICEs).

The partnership also includes efforts to expand hydrogen refueling infrastructure and support sustainable hydrogen production. Both BMW and Toyota are working with industry partners to build low-carbon hydrogen facilities and promote the adoption of hydrogen and battery electric vehicle technologies.
