Brazil excludes US from “Defense of Democracy” conference at UNGA
Brazilian authorities have decided not to invite the United States to the joint Spain-Brazil conference “In Defense of Democracy. Fighting Against Extremism,” scheduled to take place alongside the 80th session of the UN General Assembly in New York, CNN Brasil reports.
According to a Brazilian official, the decision was prompted by the administration of President Donald Trump, which “calls into question democracy and elections in Brazil,”
Countries invited to the conference include Colombia, Mexico, Chile, Kenya, Germany, France, and Canada. UN Secretary-General António Guterres is also expected to attend.
The forum is being held for the second consecutive year. In 2024, a U.S. State Department representative delegated by President Joe Biden’s administration participated. However, no U.S. invitation was issued this year.
