Britain and US start to look for alternative to GPS

24 May 2022 08:59

The US and UK began to look for an alternative to GPS navigation technology due to threats from Russia and the likelihood that electronic warfare would become the main weapon of war.

This is reported by The Times, writes Lenta.Ru.

In a conversation with the publication, UK Minister for Defence Acquisition Jeremy Quinn said that London is closely monitoring the threat of Russian interference in the work of satellites. The Times notes that the UK is considering two alternatives to GPS: OneWeb and NextNav.

Unlike GPS, which uses radio signals to determine the location of a receiver object, NextNav is based on transmitting radios installed on the ground. According to the system's manufacturers, its signals are 100,000 times stronger than GPS signals.

“We are currently looking at a range of options, including non-space alternatives, to enhance the security of the UK, and we will announce our next steps at a later date,” a Business, Energy and Industry source told the publication.

Earlier, the director of the Pentagon Missile Defence Agency, US Navy Vice Admiral John Hill, said that the US Department of Defence plans to launch two prototype satellites into orbit in March 2023, whose task will be to track hypersonic and ballistic missiles.
