Britain weighs lifting sanctions on Russia amid effectiveness concerns
Britain is contemplating the possibility of lifting sanctions imposed on Russia, particularly if they are found to be ineffective.
The UK embassy in Moscow provided this update in response to questions about the potential removal of restrictions, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.
"The Sanctions Act and bylaws adopted under it provide the legal basis for the introduction, amendment, and cancellation of sanctions imposed by the UK. Sanctions can be lifted for a number of reasons. For example, when the foreign policy objective they were imposed to support is achieved, such as a change in behaviour. Sanctions can also be lifted if it is found that they are no longer beneficial," the diplomatic mission stressed.
Since the beginning of the "special military operation", the UK has expanded its anti-Russian sanctions more than 40 times. The sanctions list now includes nearly 2,000 individuals and over 300 companies, with various levels of Russian officials also subject to the restrictions.
However, the Labour government, recently led by Prime Minister Keir Starmer, has made it clear that it does not intend to ease the sanctions regime. The House of Lords has emphasized that the new Cabinet will maintain the measures against Russia and continue to align with US foreign policy.
