Brussels questions US decision to block overseas access to Anthropic models
The European Commission (EC) is examining the implications of the United States’ restrictions on the use outside the country of advanced AI models developed by Anthropic, external access to which was effectively blocked on June 13 with little explanation.
According to Russian media, this was stated by European Commission spokesperson Thomas Regnier at a briefing in Brussels.
“We have taken note of Anthropic’s statement regarding the [US government’s] directive introducing export controls on the most advanced AI models. The European Commission is assessing the impact of this decision on the EU market,” he said.
Regnier emphasised that the Commission considers the European Union to be a “trusted partner” of the United States. He urged Washington to address security concerns “not in isolation, but together with partners.”
He also noted that the European Commission is increasingly aware that artificial intelligence is becoming a strategic opportunity in every sense.
Regnier added that the Commission is in contact with Anthropic. He did not rule out that the issue could be raised at the level of heads of state at the Group of Seven summit in France.
