Bundestag VP urges EU to designate Iran’s IRGC as terrorist organisation
German Bundestag Vice President Omid Nouripour urged the European Union to designate Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organisation.
Speaking to newspaper BILD, he argued that the IRGC plays a central role in suppressing domestic protests and in supporting radical groups beyond Iran’s borders, Caliber.Az reports.
Increasing international pressure on Iran’s security forces, he said, could become a decisive factor in shaping the country’s future trajectory.
He noted that Iran’s leadership was facing a critical moment, emphasising that the country’s economy was in free fall, the middle class was rapidly losing its financial stability, and widespread corruption and mismanagement had become entrenched.
According to Nouripour, these pressures were driving people into the streets in pursuit of basic freedoms, while the state’s primary response remained the use of violence.
Mass protests have continued across Iran amid a sharp deterioration in the country’s economic conditions, marked by the collapse of the national currency and soaring prices. Human rights organisations report that at least seven people have been killed during the unrest.
