Cathay Pacific Airways raises fees as aviation fuel crisis deepens
Hong Kong-based Cathay Pacific Airways is planning to raise its fuel surcharges by 34 per cent next month as it responds to a sharp rise in aviation fuel costs linked to the ongoing war.
According to Al Jazeera, global jet fuel prices have surged significantly since the start of the attacks on February 28. Data from the International Air Transport Association shows that the average price of aviation kerosene has nearly doubled, reaching $197 per barrel in the week ending March 20.
The airline warned that the spike in fuel costs is placing increasing pressure on its operations. “If the sharp increase in fuel prices cannot be adequately offset, our network will not be able to continue operating effectively,” Cathay Pacific Airways said in a statement.
