The United States has recently escalated military operations against the Houthi rebels in Yemen, which it said is a response to their attacks on international shipping in the Red Sea. On March 15, U.S. forces conducted airstrikes targeting Houthi-controlled sites, including radars, air defenses, and missile systems. President Donald Trump emphasized that these actions aimed to protect American interests and ensure freedom of navigation, stating that the strikes would continue until the Houthis ceased their attacks on U.S. and allied vessels.
The Houthis, backed by Iran, have been involved in regional conflicts, including threats to Israeli-linked ships and support for Palestinian groups in Gaza. In response to the U.S. strikes, the Houthis vowed to punish those responsible, labelling the attacks as a "war crime." They also warned of resuming attacks on Israeli vessels if aid to Gaza was not resumed.
U.S. officials have indicated that the airstrikes will continue indefinitely, aiming to deter further Houthi aggression and protect maritime interests. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stated that the campaign would persist until the Houthis ceased their attacks on U.S. assets.
