China urges US to lift Cuba sanctions, condemn decades-long embargo
China has voiced support for Cuba’s efforts to raise the issue of US sanctions and the long-standing American embargo at the United Nations, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said at a press briefing.
Commenting on Havana’s intention to discuss the matter at the UN General Assembly, Mao stated that the United States has maintained a comprehensive blockade and what she described as illegal unilateral sanctions against Cuba for more than six decades.
Mao argued that Washington has recently tightened restrictions on Havana, delivering what she called a “serious blow” to the well-being of Cuban citizens.
She reiterated Beijing’s opposition to unilateral sanctions that lack a basis in international law.
“We urge the United States to immediately lift the blockade of Cuba and stop exerting pressure on the country,” Mao said.
The spokesperson added that China firmly supports Cuba in safeguarding its national sovereignty and resisting external interference.
“China stands ready to work with the international community to uphold international fairness and justice,” she stressed.
