CNN: G7 leaders call for resolution to Middle East crisis with Trump's backing After prior resistance
The Group of Seven (G7) leaders issued a joint statement on June 16 calling for a resolution to the ongoing crisis in the Middle East, following adjustments to the draft that secured the support of US President Donald Trump, according to an official familiar with the matter.
“We urge that the resolution of the Iranian crisis leads to a broader de-escalation of hostilities in the Middle East, including a ceasefire in Gaza,” said the statement, attributed to the G7 leaders. Such attribution typically signals consensus among all member nations, and the official confirmed the statement was released with Trump’s approval, Caliber.Az reports via CNN.
Earlier on June 16, officials had indicated that Trump initially did not plan to endorse the draft statement, which had been spearheaded by European leaders attending the summit. However, after revisions to the document’s language — including sections addressing the need for a diplomatic resolution to the crisis and the importance of upholding international law — Trump agreed to support it, the official said.
The statement was released as Trump departed the summit early to return to Washington, citing the need to monitor the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran.
In the joint statement, the G7 leaders affirmed their commitment to regional stability by reiterating “our commitment to peace and stability in the Middle East.”
“In this context, we affirm that Israel has a right to defend itself. We reiterate our support for the security of Israel. We also affirm the importance of the protection of civilians. Iran is the principal source of regional instability and terror. We have been consistently clear that Iran can never have a nuclear weapon,” the statement reads.
