Daughter of convicted war criminal faces suspension from Armenian judiciary

07 November 2025 17:35

The Supreme Judicial Council of Armenia has approved the Prosecutor General’s request to initiate criminal proceedings and has suspended the powers of Judge Naira Grigoryan.

The motion, submitted by the Prosecutor General on November 6 under the title “On granting consent to initiate public criminal prosecution against Naira Manvelovna Grigoryan, Judge of the Court of First Instance of General Jurisdiction of Armavir Marz, Republic of Armenia,” was subsequently endorsed by the Supreme Judicial Council on November 7, Caliber.Az reports, citing Armenian media.

The Council ruled to suspend Judge Grigoryan’s authority until the conclusion of the criminal proceedings, under the Judicial Code of Armenia.

Media sources highlight that Judge Naira Manvelovna Grigoryan is the daughter of the infamous Manvel Grigoryan, a convicted war criminal and looter.

During the First Karabakh War, Manvel Grigoryan commanded Armenian occupation forces that captured Azerbaijani Jabrayil and Fuzuli districts and became notorious for his extreme brutality toward Azerbaijani prisoners of war.

He was previously detained but released in January 2020 under a travel ban due to health complications, including cancer and diabetes, and passed away in November 2020.
