Death toll from Typhoon Kalmaegi in the Philippines rises above 90
The death toll from Typhoon Kalmaegi in the Philippines has risen to 90, with 26 people reported missing and more than 430,000 displaced, the country’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (OCD) said on Wednesday, according to RFI.
Ten people were injured as a result of flooding and other incidents caused by the typhoon, the agency added.
In its latest update, the weather bureau said Typhoon Kalmaegi was moving away from the country’s western coast with maximum sustained winds of 130 kilometres per hour and gusts reaching up to 180 km/h.
The central island of Cebu recorded the highest number of fatalities — 76 — after severe flooding devastated parts of the region. Eleven additional deaths linked to flooding and debris were reported in Negros Island, as well as in the provinces of Capiz, Bohol, Leyte and Southern Leyte.
In the southern province of Agusan del Sur, six people were killed when a military helicopter deployed for post-typhoon damage assessment crashed, the OCD said.
