Diplomatic scandal: Madagascar expels French diplomat
Madagascar has expelled a French diplomat, allegedly involved in activities aimed at destabilising the island nation.
The French ambassador Arnaud Guillot was informed of the government’s decision to declare the diplomat in Antananarivo persona non grata over conduct deemed incompatible with diplomatic status, Caliber.Az reports, citing Turkish media.
The Foreign Ministry did not name the individual, but said the decision followed ongoing investigations involving both Malagasy and foreign nationals.
The statement did not detail the alleged destabilisation activities but noted that the move came amid continuing probes.
The expulsion follows accusations directed at Paris, including claims that “French mercenaries” had entered the island.
France’s Foreign Ministry rejected the allegations, stating: “These rumours are false.”
Madagascar has experienced repeated political turmoil and has been led since October by Colonel Michael Randrianirina, who came to power after protests forced former President Andry Rajoelina to step down.
Rajoelina reportedly fled the country amid escalating protests over water and electricity shortages, with France assisting his departure, according to the report.
