Drone attack sparks fire near military plant in Russia’s Azov

A fire was detected near the Azov Optical-Mechanical Plant, a Russian facility that manufactures products for the defence industry, following a nighttime drone attack on the city of Azov in the Rostov region.

Residents reported an attack on the plant, while NASA’s FIRMS system detected a fire near the facility, Caliber.Az reports per Ukrainian media. 

Additionally, Rostov governor Yuri Slusar said five people were injured in the overnight attack, including four in Azov and one in Taganrog. Among those injured in Azov was a child, he said. All five were hospitalised and receiving medical treatment.

According to the governor, Russian air defence forces destroyed more than 30 unmanned aerial vehicles over Rostov-on-Don, Kamensk-Shakhtinsky, Novoshakhtinsk, Taganrog and Azov, as well as the Azov, Myasnikovsky and Neklinovsky districts.

He said falling drones damaged apartment buildings, private homes, industrial facilities, a school, a cultural centre and vehicles in Azov. Several vehicles were also damaged in Rostov.

Air defence forces continued intercepting drones, while the drone threat remained in place, Slusar said.

“The casualties include one person in Taganrog and four in Azov, among them one child, after a UAV crashed into residential buildings. All of the injured have been hospitalised. Doctors are providing all necessary medical care. I express my sympathy and support and wish the victims a speedy recovery,” he wrote on Telegram.
