Early elections to Azerbaijani Parliament scheduled for September 1
Extraordinary elections for the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan are set for September 1, 2024, following a decree signed by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, Caliber.Az reports.
The decree also mandates the dissolution of the sixth convocation of the Milli Majlis.
The document states: "Taking into account the decision of the Parliament on June 21, 2024 'On appeal to the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan regarding the scheduling of extraordinary elections to the Milli Majlis,' as well as the decision of the Plenum of the Constitutional Court confirming the constitutionality of dissolving the Parliament and scheduling extraordinary parliamentary elections, I decree:
- The dissolution of the Milli Majlis of the Azerbaijan Republic's sixth convocation.
- The scheduling of extraordinary elections to the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan for September 1, 2024."
On June 21, the Milli Majlis, under the chairmanship of Speaker Sahiba Gafarova, adopted an appeal to President Aliyev during an extraordinary session, requesting the scheduling of early parliamentary elections.
