Earthquake with 6.2 magnitude hits Mexico

An earthquake measuring a 6.2 magnitude struck Michoacán, Mexico, on January 12, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC). 

Both agencies recorded the quake at a depth of 86 km (53 miles).

The earthquake's epicentre was located 8.5 km (5.3 miles) southeast of Coalcomán de Vázquez Pallares (population 10,784), 58 km (36 miles) south-southwest of Tepalcatepec (population 15,221), and 88 km (55 miles) southeast of Colima (population 146,965), Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.

Moderate shaking was felt by an estimated 85,000 people, while over 5 million experienced light tremors.

The USGS issued a Green alert for shaking-related fatalities and economic losses, indicating a low likelihood of casualties or significant structural damage. However, the region's construction practices—mixing vulnerable materials such as mud walls and adobe blocks with more earthquake-resistant designs—could still pose localized risks.

The area has a history of secondary hazards, including landslides, which may exacerbate the impact of earthquakes. While initial reports suggest minimal immediate damage, assessments are ongoing to determine any broader effects.

Michoacán and its surrounding regions are frequently affected by seismic activity due to tectonic activity along the Pacific Coast, making preparedness and resilient infrastructure critical for minimizing future risks.
