EU says Greenland dispute will not affect Ukraine's security guarantees

19 January 2026 19:31

The European Union has confirmed that work on security guarantees for Ukraine, to be provided by the EU and the United States following a peace agreement, is continuing in full despite recent disagreements with Washington over Greenland.

Speaking to journalists in Brussels on January 19, European Commission spokesperson Anitta Hipper said the transatlantic dispute over Greenland’s status has had no impact on preparations for Ukraine, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.

“I can only confirm that work is proceeding at full speed, as before. In this regard, nothing has changed, and we remain fully committed to supporting Ukraine,” Hipper said, responding to questions on whether Greenland might be included in US–EU discussions on security guarantees for Kyiv.

The statement comes amid heightened tensions between Brussels and Washington over the Arctic territory, but EU officials emphasised that these disagreements will not derail ongoing efforts to bolster Ukraine’s post-conflict security framework.

Trump has reiterated his desire to acquire Greenland, claiming it is needed to counter Chinese and Russian threats in the Arctic and to develop the so-called “Golden Dome” missile defence system. Experts note the US already has rights to build defence facilities on the island under a 1951 agreement, making ownership unnecessary.

European leaders sharply criticised Trump’s approach. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said divisions among allies benefit Moscow and Beijing, while Spain’s PM Pedro Sanchez warned that any US military action could weaken NATO and embolden Vladimir Putin. The European Parliament signalled that Trump’s threats could jeopardise the US-EU trade deal.

Trump’s administration has taken a strident tone on Europe, questioning the reliability of allies and emphasising power and force in global affairs. Analysts say the US focus on unilateral action risks alienating allies and undermining long-term transatlantic security.
