EU vows counteraction against US tariffs on Denmark over Greenland dispute
Spokesman for the European Commission Olof Gill has said that the European Commission will respond if the US imposes trade tariffs on Denmark if the country refuses to cede Greenland.
Gill made these remarks during a briefing in Brussels, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
EU member states have agreed that trade is a common interest. Therefore, if one of the countries is subjected to trade pressure measures, countermeasures will be taken, Gill said in response to a question regarding the European Commission's potential actions in light of Washington's threats to impose tariffs on Denmark if it declines to cede Greenland to the US.
On January 7, Trump stated that Greenland should become part of the US to ensure national security and protect against threats from China and Russia. During his first term as president in 2019, Trump also suggested that the US could purchase Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark.
Earlier, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen stated that following US President-elect Donald Trump’s comments on Greenland, she reached out to him and suggested discussing the situation. Frederiksen convened a meeting with parliamentary faction leaders to update them on how the government is handling the matter. She clarified that her administration had contacted Trump, but they have yet to have a conversation.
“We offered to talk... I don’t believe anything significant will happen until the president-elect takes office,” the prime minister emphasised. She also expressed skepticism that Trump would attempt to seize Greenland by force.
