Expert: Europeans unwilling to die for Armenia

04 March 2024 17:20

Armenian negotiation and conflict management specialist Arthur Martirosyan has suggested that Armenia's departure from the Collective Security Treaty Organisation (CSTO) may be inevitable.

“Sooner or later, Armenia will leave the CSTO, but Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan wants this to happen upon a decision of the CSTO Council. Armenia will block the CSTO’s activity, which will provide an opportunity for members of the CSTO Council to make a decision on the exclusion of Armenia from the organisation,” Martirosyan said, Caliber.Az reports.

“As for interest, initially, membership in the organisation was associated with the intention to resolve the issue of arms supplies. Now the authorities are saying that Russia cannot supply weapons, that the agreements on supplies are not being implemented though the money was paid, which means that there is no point in continuing membership in the Organisation as the main interest of this membership is not met,” he said during the Pressing show.

Martirosyan noted that the Armenian prime minister, as well as the Ukrainian president, will strive to receive preferences from the West in exchange for their actions against the Russian Federation. However, the problem is that no one in the West promised Pashinyan anything.

“Pashinyan’s actions can, on the contrary, further aggravate the situation,” he said.

“In reality, the deterioration of relations between Armenia and Russia has always been an element of the strategy of Baku and Ankara as aggravation in relations between Yerevan and Moscow automatically weakens the Armenian side. Baku and Ankara understand well that pompous statements about savior France are nonsense,” he said, adding that Ukraine’s experience has clearly demonstrated that Europeans do not intend to die for a third country.

“Having ousted Russia, Armenia will be left alone with the NATO member state - Türkiye, but none of Armenia’s potential friends today will spoil relations with Ankara due to Yerevan,” the specialist added.
