Experts question Israel's defence capabilities Against Hezbollah's expanding missile arsenal

11 July 2024 12:12

New estimates suggest that Hezbollah, the Lebanese militant group, has amassed an arsenal of 130,000 to 150,000 missiles, raising concerns about the capacity of Israeli air defences to intercept a massive missile barrage.

Despite the primitive nature of many of these missiles, their sheer quantity could pose a significant threat, Caliber.Az reports per foreign media.

According to experts Shaan Shaikh, a fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies and deputy director of its Missile Defence Project, and Fabian Hinz, a defence and military analyst at the International Institute for Strategic Studies in London, the volume of Hezbollah's arsenal could overwhelm Israel's defence systems. These estimates are notably higher than the 75,000 rockets recently cited by Israel's Alma education and research center in the North.

Hezbollah's missile cache includes Burkan missiles, capable of flying only 10 kilometers, and "Katyushas," Soviet-era Grad missiles replicated by Iran. These missiles can reach distances of up to 40 kilometers, far enough to target major Israeli cities like Haifa, which experienced a deadly Katyusha attack in 2006.

While these missiles lack advanced homing capabilities, their mass launch potential makes interception challenging. Lebanese sources claim Hezbollah can launch 100 Katyusha rockets simultaneously from trucks, complicating interception efforts.

In addition to short-range missiles, Hezbollah reportedly possesses more advanced missiles capable of striking Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, as well as numerous attack drones.

Both Sheikh and Hinz express doubts about the effectiveness of Israel's Iron Dome and David's Sling systems in countering a large-scale missile attack from Lebanon.
