Father helped US police after son admitted killing activist Charlie Kirk
The man currently in custody in connection with the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk allegedly confessed to the crime in a private conversation with his father, two sources familiar with the investigation said.
The sources, speaking on condition of anonymity due to the ongoing nature of the case, said the suspect admitted to his father that he was responsible for the shooting, CNN reports.
The father then immediately informed law enforcement and took steps to secure his son until authorities could formally detain him.
US President Donald Trump stated that he believes, “with a high degree of certainty” that the Charlie Kirk shooting suspect is in custody.”
The father of the person taken into custody cooperated with investigators, Trump said.
Four sources familiar with the investigation confirmed to CNN that an individual has been apprehended and is currently being questioned in connection with the killing. While officials have not yet publicly identified the suspect, the arrest marks a significant development in a case that has gripped national attention.
State and federal authorities are scheduled to hold a joint press conference to provide further details on the investigation, the suspect’s identity, and the circumstances surrounding the arrest.
In the latest effort to piece together the timeline of events, authorities have released surveillance footage that allegedly shows the suspect fleeing the scene immediately after the shooting. Additionally, CNN obtained separate video footage showing a person matching the suspect’s description walking through a nearby residential neighborhood prior to the attack.
The fatal shooting occurred during a public debate event hosted by Kirk at Utah Valley University. The incident has drawn condemnation from leaders across the political spectrum and reignited national debate over political violence and public safety at political events.
