Fedor Shukhin named candidate to head Dagestan
The leadership of Russia’s Dagestan region has proposed a new set of senior appointments, nominating Supreme Court chairman Fedor Shukhin as the next head of the republic and deputy envoy to the Far Eastern Federal District Magomed Ramazanov as prime minister.
The nominations were presented to Russian President Vladimir Putin during a meeting by Dagestan’s parliamentary speaker Zaur Askenderov, who said he believed the pairing would form an effective governing tandem, Caliber.Az reports per Russian media.
Putin indicated his approval of both candidates, noting that while federal procedures require a shortlist of three contenders for the regional head position, he was familiar with the nominees and broadly supportive of their selection.
Speaking about Shukhin, the president described him as a “principled and honest” official who is well known in Moscow and has demonstrated an ability to handle both administrative and political tasks while maintaining a non-confrontational style.
He added that governing Dagestan would require not only legal and organisational competence but also strong coordination with local economic and municipal leadership.
Regarding Ramazanov, Putin highlighted his experience in responding to natural disasters in Dagestan and his background in law enforcement, noting his current role in the Far Eastern Federal District. He described him as an “active and capable” administrator with a track record of effective performance in different regions.
The president also stressed the importance of building a cohesive regional team rooted in local expertise, expressing confidence that the proposed leadership structure could work in practice.
The current head of Dagestan, Sergey Melikov, was praised by Putin for his service, with the president saying his contributions would be taken into account in future career considerations.
