Financial company Euroclear files lawsuit against Russia's Central Bank

30 June 2026 14:30

Euroclear has filed a lawsuit in Belgium against Russia's Central Bank in a bid to block enforcement of a Moscow court ruling ordering the depository to pay 18.2 trillion rubles ($230 billion) over the freezing of Russian assets.

The Belgium-based financial institution is seeking a court order that would prevent enforcement of the Russian ruling, which stems from EU sanctions that led to the freezing of Russian assets, Caliber.Az reports, citing Echo.

On May 26, the Moscow Arbitration Court granted the Russian Central Bank's request to enforce its judgment against Euroclear.

The Russian Central Bank filed the 18.2 trillion-ruble lawsuit in December 2025 after the European Union announced plans to use frozen Russian assets to help finance Ukraine.

The claim includes frozen funds, the value of blocked securities and alleged lost profits.

The Central Bank previously said the procedure for enforcing the judgment against Euroclear's assets, including those located in both friendly and unfriendly foreign jurisdictions, would be determined after the ruling entered into legal force.
