FM: Calendar in the works for Erdoğan’s visit to US

29 May 2025 10:37

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan may soon pay an official visit to the United States, according to remarks made by the country’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan.

Speaking to the press, Fidan suggested that diplomatic planning is underway that could also include a reciprocal visit by US President Donald Trump to Türkiye, Caliber.Az reports, citing Turkish media.

“Work is ongoing on scheduling potential visits by Presidents Erdoğan and Trump. Our President may visit Washington, and there is also the possibility that Mr. Trump could travel to Türkiye. Ahead of these visits, they may meet during the NATO summit in The Hague. They frequently speak by phone, and their discussions are exceptionally productive,” he stated.

The possibility of Erdoğan’s trip to the United States was further reinforced by comments he made during a conversation with reporters from his press pool following his return from Hungary on May 22.

"We have developed strong relations not only with Mr. Trump but with many world leaders. It’s possible I may visit the United States. I believe there will be an opportunity to meet Mr. Trump face-to-face there. Turkish-American relations are not as insignificant as some might believe. Mr. Trump holds a highly positive view of Türkiye, and we reciprocate that sentiment. Our ties are built on mutual respect and sincerity,” Erdoğan emphasised.

In that same discussion, the Turkish president also highlighted Türkiye’s growing influence and stature on the global stage.

“Türkiye is becoming stronger and more effective. Our country holds strategic significance in international affairs. The position we’ve reached is undoubtedly the result of political stability. We’ve all witnessed how far Türkiye has progressed in the past 23 years in key areas such as the economy, politics, foreign affairs, transportation, and healthcare,” Erdoğan stated.

This evolving diplomatic narrative follows Erdoğan’s confirmation on May 5 that, after a phone conversation with Trump, the US president had extended a formal invitation for him to visit Washington.

While specific dates for the trip have not yet been finalised, Turkish media reports suggest that a visit could take place as early as June.
