FM: Hungary temporarily moves embassy from Tehran to Baku
On June 19, Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó announced a significant diplomatic shift: Hungary has temporarily relocated its embassy operations from Tehran to Baku, Azerbaijan.
This decision came amid growing security concerns in Iran, prompting urgent measures to protect Hungarian personnel and their families.
In a video message shared on social media, Szijjártó revealed that six Hungarian citizens have already safely exited Iran via Azerbaijan, per Caliber.Az.
Following their departure, he ordered all Hungarian diplomats and their family members stationed at the Tehran embassy to leave Iran immediately.
“I made the decision to instruct all diplomats and family members working at our embassy in Tehran to evacuate Iran,” Szijjártó said. “In total, 15 people — embassy staff and their families — have now been moved to Azerbaijan. As a result, the embassy’s operations in Tehran will be temporarily managed from Baku until security conditions improve.”
The foreign minister stressed the urgency and necessity of the move, underscoring that the safety of embassy workers and their families, including children, was paramount. “I had to make this decision to protect the lives of those working there and their families,” he explained.
