Türkiye, Hungary hold talks on Ukraine, Syria, regional security At joint press conference

21 March 2025 17:45

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan made key remarks on various issues, including the Ukraine war, the Gaza humanitarian crisis, and recent developments in Syria, during a press conference with Hungary's counterpart, Peter Szijjarto.

In his statement regarding Russia-Ukraine peace talks, Minister Fidan said, "As Türkiye, we will support both the ceasefire and comprehensive peace talks," Caliber.Az reports via Turkish media.

Following their bilateral meeting, the ministers held a joint press conference to discuss the current agenda. Minister Fidan highlighted the discussions held during his recent trip to Syria, where he and his team met with the Syrian government to focus on the implementation of agreements. He raised the topic of preventing the resurgence of ISIS in the region, and shared and listened to the views of the Syrian side on the matter.

The situation in Latakia was also reviewed, and potential measures were discussed. The Turkish government is closely monitoring the situation, with a strong emphasis on avoiding civilian massacres and addressing existing issues. Concrete steps have been taken, with committees being formed to oversee progress.

The political stability of the country is crucial, and discussions were held on potential actions to revitalise the economy, including the kinds of assistance Türkiye can offer. Minister Fidan reiterated Türkiye’s long-standing support for ongoing peace and ceasefire negotiations. "We have always been on the side of peace from the beginning," he added. It is encouraging, he noted, to see the new US administration actively pursuing this agenda.

He expressed hope that Russia would soon announce acceptance of a temporary ceasefire, even if it’s for 30 days. Work is ongoing to determine how peace can be achieved, with regular meetings, including an online session today, continuing under the auspices of President Erdoğan.

Minister Szijjarto, commenting on Russia-US discussions, stated, "We expect that Brussels' pro-war policies will not hinder the peace talks."

In his statement, Szijjarto also remarked, "The European security architecture can only be discussed if both Russia and Türkiye are involved. There are ideological fanatics in Europe. It is impossible to talk about Europe's security architecture without including Russia and Türkiye."
