21 August 2026 11:32

Igor Laptev, an 83-year-old retired Russian FSB major general and former senior government official, was found dead at his apartment in Moscow on August 20.

The incident occurred on Verkhnyaya Krasnoselskaya Street. Moskovsky Komsomolets reported that Laptev died by suicide.

Laptev began his career by taking part in military operations in Afghanistan before serving for many years in the Federal Security Service (FSB), where he was responsible for information security.

In the late 1990s, he worked in Russia’s tax police and later served as deputy minister for taxes and levies.

After leaving government service, Laptev headed the board of directors of the Informtekhnika group of companies.

He was awarded Russia’s Order of Honour for his service.
