FT reveals device to replace smartphones in near future
Major technology companies in the United States are considering smart glasses in the style of the Google Glass headset as a new consumer device that will eventually replace smartphones.
This is reported by the business publication Financial Times (FT).
The idea of wearable headsets in the form of glasses with Internet access and various multimedia arose about 10 years ago, but all attempts to make such gadgets generally popular failed, and the concept was mostly forgotten.
The revival of industry interest in smart glasses has occurred thanks to the capabilities of artificial intelligence (AI). Device developers and manufacturers hope that constant and easy access to ChatGPT-style virtual assistants will attract consumers.
In 2021, the well-known brand of glasses and accessories Ray-Ban, together with Meta (banned in the Russian Federation as extremist), released a series of sunglasses with cameras and speakers in the frame. In September 2023, the second version of the devices was released, supplemented with the ability to call an AI assistant. At the same time, the glasses themselves are deprived
screens and other features for working in augmented reality.
"We see the incredible potential of [smart glasses], especially if you use audio and large language models as an interface," said Cristiano Amon, executive director of microprocessor manufacturer Qualcomm.
Major players are entering the competitive race in this segment. Samsung has registered the trademarks "Samsung Glasses" and "Galaxy Glasses" in the United States and the United Kingdom, prompting speculation that the South Korean tech giant may be working on its own smart glasses.
