G7 reaffirms unwavering support for Ukraine amid Russia’s missile escalation
The G7 countries have strongly criticized Russia's recent launch of the Oreshnik medium-range missile system, calling it a "reckless and provocative act."
This statement was released following a meeting of G7 foreign ministers in Fiuggi, Italy, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.
“Russia's use of a medium-range ballistic missile on November 21 is yet another example of its reckless and provocative behaviour. Our support for Ukraine's territorial integrity, sovereignty, and independence will remain unwavering,” the G7 communiqué stated.
Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the missile launch on November 21, following strikes by US ATACMS and British Storm Shadow missiles on Russian territory. In his address, Putin revealed that the new-generation Oreshnik missile was used to target the Yuzhmash military plant in Dnipro (formerly Dnipropetrovsk), citing it as a direct response to Western-supplied weapons being used against Russia.
In their statement, the G7 also warned China and other nations allegedly aiding Russia militarily in the Ukraine conflict. This includes financial institutions and organizations believed to facilitate Russia’s acquisition of equipment and goods for its defence industry. The G7 pledged to impose measures to curb Russian revenues derived from raw material and energy exports.
Italian Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Antonio Tajani reaffirmed the G7’s commitment to supporting Ukraine militarily and economically until the conflict concludes.
“We will continue to support Ukraine until the conflict ends, including by sending weapons,” Tajani said after the meeting.
Italy is already preparing its 10th military aid package for Ukraine, though Tajani admitted it remains unclear what the package will include or when it will be finalized. Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto previously acknowledged the strain on Italy’s resources, stating that they are “practically depleted.”
Despite these limitations, Italy has delivered significant military aid to Ukraine, including two SAMP/T air defence systems, one of which was transferred recently. Crosetto highlighted that 40% of Italy’s available air defence tools have been supplied to Ukraine, underlining the challenges of maintaining long-term support amidst resource constraints.
