Gagauzia rejects Maia Sandu's presidency over alleged election falsifications
The autonomous Gagauz region, has refused to recognize Maia Sandu as the legitimate president of Moldova, with regional leader Evghenia Gutul stating that the election results were falsified.
Gutul made the remarks, explaining that Gagauzia does not recognize Sandu as president because the Moldovan government has failed to acknowledge the region's authority, Caliber.Az reports citing Russian media.
Gutul accused the central government of pressuring the Gagauz leadership and refusing to engage in cooperation. She further asserted that, had the election results not been tampered with, a more worthy candidate would have emerged victorious.
In response to the tensions, President Sandu had previously remarked that the Moldovan government had not done enough to address the concerns of the Russian-speaking population, particularly in regions like Gagauzia, where not all residents speak Romanian. Sandu also expressed her intention to visit Gagauzia more frequently to engage in discussions with its citizens.
